For Diwali, wear an embroidered kurta set or a sharara in a rich, festive colour — maroon, red, gold, purple or a deep green — with some gold or silver work to catch the lamplight. Match the weight to the occasion: something comfortable for the puja and the family visits, something with shine and movement for the evening party. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November.
Colours for Diwali
Warm, rich colours are traditional: red and maroon, yellow and gold, orange, pink, purple and green. Many families wear something new on Diwali, and metallic work — zari, sequins, coin detailing — looks its best by the light of diyas. Black with gold reads well at a party, though many households prefer a colour for the puja itself.
For the Lakshmi puja and family visits
The puja usually means sitting on the floor, moving between rooms full of lamps and greeting a lot of relatives, so choose a set you can sit and bend in, with a salwar or palazzos. The Noor Embroidered Kurta Set is maroon with gold embroidery across the yoke, hem and cuffs, the Suhana Textured Kurta Set is rust georgette set with small mirrors, and the Nyra Ikat Kurta Set is ivory with a green peacock ikat, for something lighter.
For a Diwali party
Evening parties, and the card parties that run late into the night, want shine. The Alia Sequin Stripe Kurta Set has a gold sequin and coin V-yoke over black satin palazzos, the Rani Crepe Co-ord Set is red crepe with a gold coin-fringe neckline, and the Sahar Satin Kurta Set is navy satin with a silver-embroidered placket whose sheen shifts as you move. For something less expected, the Kiran Aztec Kaftan Set drapes a black kaftan with a red and cream embroidered bib over matching palazzos.

For a formal Diwali dinner
If the evening is a dressed-up one, go fuller. The Anisha Sharara Set pairs a purple georgette kurti with a full floral crepe sharara that swings as you walk, and the Zarina Embroidered Gown is maroon, worked with dense gold embroidery across the yoke and sleeves.
Around the diyas
- Pin your dupatta at the shoulder, and keep trailing sleeves and dupatta ends away from open flames.
- Synthetic fabrics such as polyester chiffon and georgette melt rather than char when they meet a flame, so take extra care in them.
- Crepe is the forgiving choice for a long day of sitting and visiting, because it does not crease. More on that in crepe, georgette, chiffon or satin.
Finishing the look
- Let one thing lead: a worked neckline does the job of a necklace, so wear earrings with it.
- Juttis or block heels for the visits; save the higher heels for the party.
- If you are wearing a sharara or a farshi, see types of salwar, explained for the kurta length that suits it.
